We’ve brewed a new taproom one-off, the Ales for ALS IPA, which is now on tap. Founders is one of nearly seventy participating breweries, who are all brewing their own unique beer for this campaign. A proprietary hop blend (featuring Citra, Mosaic & some experimental hops) was provided to each participating brewery to use in their creation. Proceeds from sales of these beer go to benefit ALS Research. You’ll find it to be a smooth, golden, easy-drinking IPA. Stop in and try it soon because we didn’t brew all that much and it will only last for a limited time.
Ales for ALS is a national campaign to raise funds and awareness for ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a fatal neurodegenerative disorder. Participating brewers brew special beers with a proprietary hop blend, and donate a portion of the sales to the ALS Therapy Development Institute, the world’s leader in ALS research. Built by and for patients living with the disease today, the Cambridge, MA-based drug discovery biotech has one mission: to end ALS.

We’re also participating in GR’s annual community-building sandwich competition, The Grandwich! Here’s the how the Grandwich camp describes the competition (put on by the Neighborhood Business Alliance & Downtown GR):
Grandwich is a fun competition between unique restaurants, delis, cafes, bakeries, etc. located Downtown and in the neighborhood business districts. The goal is to create a sandwich that wins exclusive rights to be called the OFFICIAL 2014 sandwich of Grand Rapids – or – “Grandwich.” As the competition enters its fourth year, we’re planning the highest stakes yet. We will provide the winner with free marketing to proclaim the victory.
For the competition, businesses dream up a sandwich and submit what they feel is an award-winning entry. The competition will last four weeks and will conclude with a final event at Rosa Parks Circle where we will announce a People’s Choice award along with 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place winners determined by a panel of judges.
Judging will take place via the following parameters: use of local ingredients, uniqueness, taste & appearance.
*In previous years, we’ve submitted regular deli menu items like the Devil Dancer & the Louis A. Cornelius. This year, we decided to make something special just for the competition. Here’s what we’ve submitted to the Grandwich Competition:
- a Porchetta (pork-etta) Sandwich (Porchetta is a pork roast w/2 kinds of pork rolled together)
- we’ll be using pork belly stuffed with bratwurst meat
- this’ll go on a fresh Sesame Seed Hamburger Bun
- with Red Cabbage Kapusta (kapusta is essentially polish kraut, slightly thicker and usually with meat bits)
- Summit Hop-pickled Arugula
- and a Sweet Tomato Marmalade

We announced today that we’ll be releasing Dark Penance, an Imperial Black IPA, as a specialty release this October 2014 with availability through the end of the year. It’s replacing the TBA in our availability calendar that many of you noticed when we published it late in 2013. Dark Penance will be available throughout our distribution footprint both on draft and in 12 oz. bottles with a suggested retail price of $11.99 per 4-pack.
Dark Penance is the newest addition to our lineup of world class IPAs, which includes Centennial IPA, Red’s Rye IPA, Double Trouble, Devil Dancer and All Day IPA, a session IPA.
“We don’t just add beers to our lineup to have something new on the shelves,” said Dave Engbers, co-founder and vice president of brand and education at Founders Brewing Co. “Our Backstage Series is for experimentation and keeping things fresh, and we still only put those out a few times a year. Dark Penance, on the other hand, went through many recipe iterations before we were willing to put it up there with the other beers that we release again and again, year after year.”
The recipe for Dark Penance took about a year to develop, time that was mostly spent perfecting the beer’s balance and hop profile. It’s the first new beer to be added to our lineup since All Day IPA, which was released in spring 2012 following three years of development.
Dark Penance starts with a heavy malt foundation of Crystal malt for sweetness and just enough Midnight Wheat to push the color to black. The bitterness is huge (100 IBUs huge), but balanced by malt sweetness and alcohol burn. The hop flavors and aromas range from citrus to floral to pine—most everything that hops can be—thanks to a delicious blend of hand-selected Chinook and Centennial hops. The Imperial Black IPA is 8.9% ABV.
“Black IPAs are becoming more common, but Imperial Black IPAs aren’t, and imperializing things is what we do,” said Brewmaster Jeremy Kosmicki. “Plus, we thought this beer would fit in well with our specialty lineup alongside Imperial Stout, Curmudgeon Old Ale and Double Trouble.” Dark Penance will be available as the follow up to Double Trouble in our specialty calendar, from roughly October to December, dependent on distributor shipments. It will be released in our taproom on draft and in bottles as of October 2014.
We’re excited to announce that we’re going to release Mosaic Promise, an ale brewed with a single malt and a single hop, this September. Proceeds from the sale of this new ale will benefit ArtPrize, the world’s largest art competition that takes place annually in Grand Rapids, Mich. Mosaic Promise will be sold in Michigan, Wisconsin, greater New York City and greater Chicago both on draft and in 12 oz. bottles with a suggested retail price of $9.99 per 6-pack.
In April 2013 we inked a deal with ArtPrize that made us the official brewery of the competition for the next five years. The premier leadership sponsorship deal included offering our beer at all official ArtPrize events, signage, promotion, merchandise, specialized glassware and other items. It also included permission for us to use the ArtPrize identity marks (logo and graphics) on any co-packaged items, including beer. We plan to release a new beer for each year of our five-year partnership with ArtPrize under the name “Artist Series”. This is year two. Last year’s release was Inspired Artist Black IPA.
“Making a unique beer in honor of ArtPrize has become a fun challenge for our brewers,” said Dave Engbers, our co-founder and vice president of brand and education. “This year’s release just fell into place. Ninkasi—a stained glass ArtPrize submission that showed in our taproom last year—became a permanent part of our taproom when we purchased it last year. We knew right away that it would make a perfect label for Mosaic Promise, a beautifully simple beer that we had been experimenting with for some time.”
Mosaic Promise showcases a single malt—Golden Promise—and a single hop—Mosaic. The traditional barley’s depth of flavor and the versatility of the hops’ bittering, flavor and aroma characteristics are the strong pillars that comprise the structure of this clean, rich, golden beer. We can brew complex beers with the best of them, but we recognize that there’s also beauty in simplicity. The beer clocks in at 5.5% ABV and 50 IBUs.
Proceeds from the sale of Mosaic Promise will support the future programming of the ArtPrize organization. ArtPrize is an international art competition, open to any artist and decided by public vote. Its mission is to promote critical dialogue and collaboration through new, creative ideas among a large and diverse population of people. As an innovator in redefining what beer can be, we believe that experimentation is central to the human experience—whether one experiments with grains and hops or colored glass and light—and that sharing one’s creation with the public is a brave act worth celebrating.

We also partnered with ArtPrize to launch ArtPrize on Tap, the newest ArtClub membership perk. From the patios of the Centennial Room, our private second-floor entertainment space, ArtPrize on Tap offers ArtClub members the opportunity to connect year-round and stay on the ArtPrize insider track, while enjoying Founders food and beer. We will premiere Mosaic Promise at the August installment of ArtPrize on Tap. Mosaic Promise will be available for a limited time starting on Sunday, September 14, across our Michigan, Wisconsin, metro NYC and Chicagoland distribution footprint. It will be released in our taproom on draft and in bottles starting on Tuesday, September 16. There will be an event in our taproom featuring the artists and introducing the beer from 4:30-6:30pm that day. One-of-a-kind Mosaic Promise posters will be given away, while supplies last. Mosaic Promise will also be featured at official ArtPrize events.
This year marks the sixth edition of ArtPrize, which will take place Sept. 24–Oct. 12, 2014. Our taproom will be a venue for the sixth year running.
Grand Rapids artists Matt and Elizabeth Kolenda, Adrianne Hollemans and Maria Orr make up Kolenda Art Glass. They submitted the stained glass piece “Ninkasi” as an ArtPrize 2013 entry that showed in the Founders taproom. Ninkasi is the ancient Sumerian goddess of beer, and Kolenda depicted her with traditional mouth-blown antique glass that was both painted and stained in vibrant colors. In their artists’ statement, they said, “Just as new, creative brewers everywhere are challenging the age-old custom of brewing beer, ‘Ninkasi’ puts an exciting spin on the common perception of what stained glass form is and was ‘supposed’ to be.”
The Founders Family fell in love with Ninkasi and purchased the piece. She’s now a permanent installation in our taproom.

The Brewers Association has chosen our hometown of Grand Rapids as the location for the 36th Annual National Homebrewers Conference, taking place June 12-14, 2014. Slots are still available if you’re interested in attending!

Furthermore, every conference attendee will receive one bottle of a custom Founders beer brewed by our brewmaster Jeremy Kosmicki and brewer Laura Houser in collaboration with local homebrewing legend Jeff Carlson. Oak-Aged Rye IPA is brewed with Munich and Crystal malts and a huge percentage of rye malt. It’s bittered and flavored with German Magnum and Perle hops, heavily finished and dry-hopped with Cascade hops hand selected from the Yakima Valley. This 7.2% ABV ale is aged for multiple weeks on American white oak and carries 55 IBUs. Bottles of this beer will only be available to conference attendees. It will not be available anywhere else.

We plan to introduce Dissenter, an Imperial India Pale Lager (IPL) brewed with a wide variety of tropical, citrus-forward hops, this August to mark the tenth installment in our Backstage Series. Like all of our Backstage Series beers, Dissenter will be sold in 750mL bottles, with a suggested retail price of $11.99 per bottle.
Dissenter is the first lager we’ve brewed since Noble Lager, a beer that hasn’t been in our production cycle for twelve years. Dissenter is our argument in favor of the potential for complex lagers, clocking in at 8.7% ABV and 70 IBUs.
This beer is a departure from our other releases for a couple of reasons: All of the beers in our standard lineup are ales, which are fermented at warm temperatures, whereas lagers are fermented cold. Plus, Dissenter uses a different kind of yeast from other Founders beers. Test batches of the Imperial IPL were brewed using our pilot system and have been on tap in our taproom off and on throughout the past few months. The longer brewing process used for lagers gives this beer an exceptionally clean finish, allowing the clear beauty of the hops to shine.
“With Dissenter, we’re releasing yet another Backstage Series beer that doesn’t fit within standard beer style guidelines,” said Co-Founder and Vice President of Brand & Education Dave Engbers. “And that’s the point. It’s a celebration of the creativity of our brewing team, and we’re looking forward to sharing it with the growing circle of beer enthusiasts.
Dissenter will be released in limited quantities across our distribution footprint beginning on Friday, August 1, and will be available at our taproom that same week. Look for one more Backstage Series releases from us in 2014.
We announced our lineup of eleven Philly Beer Week 2014 events today, including an All-Star Road Show event on Sunday, June 1, from 4-11pm at World Cafe Live. “All-Star” refers to both the draft lineup and the FBC All-Stars, the official brewery band, who will be playing a live show that evening.
The All-Star draft lineup for the Road Show will include some of our specialty and Backstage Series releases, a few taproom one-offs never before on draft outside of our taproom in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and some surprises. There will be 18 beers on tap.
Workout will open the night followed by the FBC All-Stars—a super group made up of the brewery’s finest musicians (including brewers, the production planning manager, warehouse manager, deli manager, taproom manager, two bartenders, and a cook)—for an entertaining evening of music and beer.

We’re headed west! We’re expanding our distribution territory to include the Grand Canyon State, with Hensley & Company slated to represent our brand across the entire state of Arizona beginning in April.
“Arizona is our first truly western state of distribution,” said Co-Founder and CEO Mike Stevens. “There are a lot of Michigan natives in Arizona, and it’s a state with a developing craft beer scene, so it made sense for us to open it this spring.”
Residents of Arizona can expect to find our year-round and seasonal products, both in bottles and on draft, in the first shipment. The launch is set for the week of April 21. Specialty releases will follow our release schedule from there.
To recap, we’re opening five new states in April, including Oklahoma, Tennessee, Arkansas and Louisiana in addition to Arizona, bringing our total distribution footprint to 32 states. Here’s our updated distribution map:

Something fun for cyclists planning to come to town for KBS Week: We are once again partnering with Kisscross Events to host the annual Barry-Roubaix bicycle race, which is the largest gravel road race in the country. The event kicks off the region’s cycling season and challenges thousands of bikers against the Barry County elements, elevation, gravel, rocks, sand and mud, and possible snow and ice.
The sixth annual Barry-Roubaix, named after the classic Paris-Roubaix race in France, will begin and end in downtown Hastings, Mich., (about 40 miles southeast of Grand Rapids) on March 22. Registration is currently open at www.barry-roubaix.com.
The race begins at 10 a.m. and is open to the public. The Founders after-party and Velocity USA awards ceremony takes place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and admission is free to the public. The Sweet J Band will also be on hand jamming on the awards stage from 3 to 6 p.m.
The Barry-Roubaix encourages racers of all levels and of any age by offering four racing categories, including the following:

We recently received some copies of Locally Brewed to sell in our company store. The writer, Anna Blessing, profiles 20 breweries in the Midwest, including Founders. It’s a beautiful book, and we think Anna has represented us and many of our friends well.
One of our favorite features is the “Brewer’s Playlist” included for each brewery. Blessings asked brewers to submit about 15 songs that they love to listen to while at work (or otherwise). If you’ve ever toured a brewery in action (like ours on Saturdays and Tuesdays!), you know that music tends to be one of the things that makes breweries go ’round.

The main purpose of this first version of our app is a beer locator (modeled after our website’s beer locator) that allows you to find our beer in your area, wherever you are. It includes a comprehensive beer menu, with beautiful photos and beer availability information, and was created by Fusionary, a digital studio with offices across the street from the brewery.
We’ve been wanting to create this app for some time now. One of the most common questions we get is, “Where can I find X beer in X city?” This new tool will give you the power to answer this question yourself—because we know you always have your phone on you. Let’s just hope you remembered your house keys this time.
Download the app now and keep in mind that we plan to add new features to it in future iterations.
We’re doing something a little bit different for the KBS release in Grand Rapids this year.
Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS) is our most infamous beer. It’s included in lists of the best beers in the world published by sources ranging from RateBeer to Men’s Fitness. It’s inherently a limited release because it ages in bourbon barrels for a year in the caves beneath Grand Rapids. In years past, beer enthusiasts like you have crashed web servers with the traffic caused by your interest in this beer, and we’ve had people camping outside the brewery in frigid temperatures so they can be first to get their share.
This year we’ve decided to open up the release so that people coming to Grand Rapids for KBS can enjoy all of Beer City USA. We’ll still be releasing bottles in our taproom, through a pre-ticketed release that lasts Tuesday, March 18, through, Saturday, March 22. Tickets will go on sale via EventBrite on Saturday, March 1, at 11am EST. What’s changing this year is we’re giving fifteen Founders-supporting craft-beer-centric bars and restaurants in the Grand Rapids area each a keg of KBS to tap on a day of their choosing throughout this same week.

KBS will still be released starting on April 1 in limited quantities throughout our distribution footprint. KBS bottles will be released to our local market starting on Tuesday, March 25.
We’re excited to announce 15-pack cans of All Day IPA will begin shipping to our distributor partners in March, replacing All Day IPA 12-pack cans without raising the suggested retail price.
This is the first time a major craft brewery has put out a 15-pack.
“We are able to offer 15-pack cans due to production efficiencies from packaging cost savings,” said Co-Founder Mike Stevens. “We’re excited to pass the savings on to our customers as a way of saying thank you for their reception of All Day IPA.”
Developing the All Day IPA recipe was no easy task. “We recognized the need for a full-flavored IPA with a lower ABV,” said Co-Founder Dave Engbers. “The challenge was creating a beer that had intense hop aromatics balanced with the malts without packing a big ABV punch.”
Following a limited release in 2012 due to hop shortages, we were able to send All Day IPA to all of our markets in February 2013, and it quickly became our leading seller. We moved the beer from our seasonal to our year-round lineup in July of last year. All Day IPA was the first Founders product to be released in cans; 12-pack cans of the beer hit the market in August 2013.
All Day IPA is a 4.7% ABV session ale, brewed with Simcoe and Amarillo hops and measuring out at 42 IBUs. We set our minds to brewing this beer because we wanted an American IPA that worked with an active lifestyle. It has won numerous awards, including a silver medal in the session beer category at the GABF in 2010 under a working name and, most recently, a 2014 Good Food Award.
Centennial IPA, the newest addition to our canned offerings, will remain in 12-packs. All Day IPA will still be available in the traditional six-pack bottles in addition to 15-pack cans. Other beers from our portfolio may be canned, as well, but those brands have yet to be determined.

The Good Food Awards celebrate the kind of food we all want to eat: tasty, authentic and responsibly produced. They grant awards to outstanding American food producers and the farmers who provide their ingredients. They host an annual Awards Ceremony and Marketplace at the iconic Ferry Building in San Francisco to honor the Good Food Award recipients who push their industries towards craftsmanship and sustainability while enhancing our agricultural landscape and building strong communities.
Winners were selected from 1,450 entries from all 50 states in a blind tasting held in September. The 225 judges, experts in their various industries, flew to San Francisco for a full day of blind tasting. Those that rose to the top were subject to a rigorous vetting process to verify they met the sustainability and social responsibility criteria to win a Good Food Award. This year’s Good Food Award winners exemplify excellence in both taste and responsible production.
During the award ceremony on Thursday, January 16, culinary luminaries Alice Waters, Ruth Reichl and Nell Newman honored this year’s 130 winners onstage. The ceremony commenced with opening remarks from M.C. Dr. Zeke Emanuel, co-founder of the Farmers Market at the White House and advisor to President Obama on health care, who noted the integral link between health and the growth of sustainable food communities across the country.
Beer entries: Breweries making Good Beer are pioneers of local manufacturing, using traditional and creative brewing methods to redefine consumer expectations for craftsmanship with their beer. These brewers aim to reshape supply chains and promote responsibility by sourcing ingredients locally and grown without synthetic inputs when possible, practicing resource conservation and supporting local communities. We plan to introduce Smoked Porter, brewed with a combination of beech wood–smoked barley and oak-smoked wheat malt along with a generous helping of chocolate malt, on shelves and draft lines beginning in February 2014. Like all of our Backstage Series beers, Smoked Porter will be sold in 750mL bottles, with a suggested retail price to be determined.
Brewed for the first time on our new three-barrel pilot system a few weeks ago, we decided this one was too good to keep to ourselves. This 8% ABV smoked robust porter delivers a beautiful balance of chocolate and smoke character that’s flavor forward without being overwhelming. It’s our first ever smoked beer.
“This is a style of beer that we’ve discussed brewing for a decade,” said Co-Founder and Vice President of Brand & Education Dave Engbers. “We weren’t able to fit it into our production schedule for years. Now, with our pilot system, our brewers have room for greater experimentation and aggressive recipe formulation. Brewing beers like this was the idea behind launching our Backstage Series and was a driving force in our investment in a pilot system this past summer.”
We also recently added a draft line in our taproom dedicated to our pilot system, only pouring those small batch experimental beers. A recent offering showcased our first lager in twelve years.
Limited bottles of Founders Smoked Porter will only be available in Michigan; draft will be available in most markets across our distribution footprint. The beer will be released in February, with exact timing dependent on distributor shipments. Bottles will be released in our taproom at a to-be-determined date. It will not be a pre-ticketed release. Look for at least two more Backstage Series releases from Founders in 2014.
